Monica Los Angeles, CAThe Ark’s production of Macbeth re-conceptualized this play while still maintaining textual integrity. The staging creates a visceral response, does not feel pretentious or forced, and pulls the audience in through its grounding in the horror/suspense genre. Director Steven Shields makes bold choices with this production, shifting the witches to a Greek-style chorus to highlight the question of whether or not prognostication of the future causes it come to pass. Jim Hanna shines as Macbeth, skillfully portraying the king’s decent into madness. Lady Macbeth, played by Renae Geerlings, gives a pitch-perfect performance, giving me chills during such moments as the unsex me soliloquy. Also highly adept were Steve Lewis as Banquo and Quincy Miller as Macduff. If you’re looking for a macabre performance of a timeless classic this play should not be missed. November 12, 2008
Patty Los Angeles, CAThis is not your typical Macbeth. This is ensemble work at its best, what with the witches turning into a creepy type of Greek chorus. All of the actors stay on stage and move in and out of the cloaked congregation as their characters come into play. The actor playing Macbeth has never made Shakespeare sound more accessible. Lady Macbeth is cunning, fragile, and 100% committed. The director streamlined the story, often having two scenes integrated into one, which in my opinion, makes it easier to understand for those who don't know the story. I really enjoyed this performance and applaud the risky decision to make Macbeth different. Some might not like it, but I absolutely enjoyed it. No matter what you think, this is LA Theater at its best, and everyone should see it. For once, this is true theater that can actually affect the audience. November 3, 2008
Matt Walton Los Angeles, CaUnique to say the least and not in a bad way. I read the play before attended and almost wished I hadn't because this version is very different. I recommend you see this show. Return to Macbeth details
